This Yamaha U1 soft upright piano was the result of an incredibly detailed and rewarding process—captured over two days and shaped through weeks of meticulous editing.
Built entirely by hand, this instrument became a balance of precision and creativity: carefully sampling multiple velocity layers, organizing every note, and listening through each take with intention, while also learning to embrace the organic imperfections that give it character.
Recorded in a mountain house in Asheville, this piano naturally carries subtle nuances of the space around it—the faintest room ambience, the occasional distant bird outside, and the small details that make it feel less clinical and more human. Rather than chasing impossible perfection, I leaned into those moments as part of what makes this instrument feel expressive, natural, and alive.
The result is a piano that feels deeply musical and human—full of warmth, personality, and the kind of realism that comes from being thoughtfully crafted by hand.
